Steven was born to Steven Sr. and Laura Jean in Denver, Colorado at St. Anthony’s hospital. He lived on Park Hill in Denver and attended grade school at Park Hill Elementary school. When he started 6th grade his family moved to Arvada, a suburb of Denver, where he attended Drake Jr. High School. As a child and adolescent, Steven was an avid reader. He read every Steven King novel ever written by the time he finished 8thgrade. He also developed a love for the outdoors while living in Colorado. He and his father went skiing often and in the summer enjoyed hiking, fly fishing, and backpacking. Steven started tying his own flies with the help his father. Prior to starting 10th grade his family moved to Grove, Oklahoma. Although this was a huge change, Steven embraced the transition and poured himself into his studies and sports. He played football and golf in high school, lettering each year and making straight A’s throughout high school. Steven finished high school as Salutatorian and decided to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he majored in Zoology, with a pre-med emphasis. Steven knew from a young age that he wanted to be a doctor. Many of his friends, when signing his senior year book, addressed him as Doctor Schultz. They knew as did he that he could achieve his goals. Not only did he know he wanted to become a physician, Steven knew early on which field he hoped to pursue. Growing up in Denver, he was a huge Broncos fan and he wanted to be the personal surgeon for John Elway. Steven also grew up watching OU football, as his grandfather had attended OU in the early 50’s, after serving in the Navy, during World War II. Steven finished his undergraduate degree with a 4.0 and was Summa Cum Laude. He then attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma, where he likewise excelled. Steven was junior AOA, a distinction that only the top 1% of students attain. During medical school Steven made some lifelong friends and established relationships that would shape his future. In July of 1998, after completing medical school, Steven embarked on his medical career. Having matched in Orthopedic Surgery at the prestigious JPS residency, Steven moved to Fort Worth, Texas. He would spend the next five years in Fort Worth as an intern and then resident. He finished the five years in Fort Worth with a stint as Chief resident for orthopedic surgery. Although Steven had planned to be a team doctor as a child, he discovered a new love, while in residency. He found that the most gracious and appreciative patients were not athletes. Rather the patients he fell in love with, were much older. Although they may have been athletes at an earlier time in their lives, these patients were more elderly. It was in Fort Worth, working with Russell Wagner and Robert Schmidt, that Steven realized he wanted to spend his career caring for patients with worn out joints. He took this love and excitement with him to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he spent a year under the tutelage of Richard White. Dr. White was the president of the prestigious hip society and Steven spent a year working with him directly. He did hundreds of hip and knee replacements and did extensive research in the field of joint replacement surgery. With his co-fellow, Steven completed two papers submitted for publication and studied the field of Adult Reconstructive Surgery. After completing his fellowship, Steven decided to move back to Norman, Oklahoma, where he had attended college. He joined a group of surgeons and spent the next 14 years practicing Orthopedic Surgery. Steven is one of the few fellowship trained joint surgeons in Oklahoma and has performed countless thousands of surgeries. He has studied minimally invasive surgery and performs outpatient hip and knee replacements. He is also one of only a few surgeons who does anterior supine total hip replacements and partial knee replacements. Although he has spent much of his life in his studies and perfecting his craft, Steven has several other activities that hold his interest. Chief among these is spending time with his three children. Abby 15, Sam 12, and Landry 10 are the true love of his life. He spends as much of his free time with them as he possibly can. They enjoy traveling, playing games, hiking, fishing, watching movies, and laughing. Known lovingly as the tickle monster, Steven loves to be silly and just have fun with his kids. There is nothing on earth or in life he would rather do than spend quality time with his 3 children. He also enjoys playing golf although he doesn’t find enough time to do so and thus he maintains a high handicap. He reminds himself however, that a bad day of golf beats a good day of most everything else. It is Steven’s goal and that of his entire staff, to help people. Particularly those suffering from joint pain. He possesses a skill set that few others have and he is ready, willing, and able to help anyone he can. Steven considers each patient to be family and wants to give them his undivided attention and deliver the highest level of care possible. In creating the Oklahoma Center for Joint Replacement surgery, Steven hopes that he will be able to help more people than he was able to in his previous practice. He and his staff would love the opportunity to help you or your family with any and all of your orthopedic needs.
